  • What is Forest School?
Forest School is a child-centred inspirational learning process, that offers opportunities for holistic growth through regular sessions. It is a long-term program that supports play, exploration and supported risk taking. It develops confidence and self-esteem through learner inspired, hands-on experiences in a natural setting. Forest School has a developmental ethos shared by thousands of trained practitioners around the world, who are constantly developing their learning styles and skills to support new and imaginative learners. Its roots reach back to the open-air culture, friluftsliv, or free air life, seen as a way of life in Scandinavia where Forest School began. It arrived in the UK in 1993 and has grown from strength to strength since then. (Reference from the FSA website)
  • What should we wear?
This varies on the weather, and in England it can vary drastically from day to day! But generally you’ll need boots or wellies, long sleeved tops & trousers. We believe there is no such thing as bad weather, only unsuitable clothing! The clothing worn can really impact the enjoyment of a session, it’s not much fun on a cold frosty morning when your fingers are numb and you’re freezing cold. But if you’re wrapped up in layers and warm socks & gloves then you’ll have much more fun. Likewise you’ll have much more fun in the rain if you’re head to toe in waterproof clothing. In Winter, layers are really important: you’ll need a thermal base layer (top & bottoms), long sleeved tops, a warm wool jumper/fleece, snowsuit or warm, waterproof coat, waterproof or over trousers / salopettes, warm boots (wellies can make for cold toes unless paired with warm wool socks), hat, scarf, gloves,. In the Spring then long sleeved trousers and tops, a jumper or fleece, plus waterproofs and sturdy boots are usually more than adequate. You may need a sunhat and suncream for any warmer weather. During the Summer months then lightweight clothing works best, keeping arms and legs covered. Waterproofs may still be needed and sturdy boots or trainers can be worn. And a sun hat and suncream. The Autumn months are very similar to the Spring months, layers may well be handy during this time too. Plus hats and gloves for any colder days. Please wear old comfortable, clothes that you don’t mind getting muddy and dirty. Shoes need to be closed toes and a change of clothes is always useful.
  • Will the sessions still run in bad weather?
Yes! Sessions will only be cancelled if a yellow weather warning is issued, for example high winds or heavy snow due to the risk of injury from falling branches. We aim to give at least 24 hours notice of any cancelled sessions, and a refund will be issued. Amazing play and fun can be had in the rain, and we do have our parachute shelter over the fire circle should we need it.
  • Can I cancel a session?
Sessions are non refundable. If you no longer wish to attend, then please let us know at least 48 hours beforehand and we will happily move your session to an alternative date.
  • What age are the sessions suitable for?
Our toddler sessions on Friday mornings are best for confident walkers, approx 18 months +, younger siblings and babies in carriers are welcome to join free of charge.
  • How much are your sessions & how do I book?
All sessions can be booked and paid for here on our website. It is really beneficial for children to attend Forest School sessions regularly. It allows them to grow in confidence week by week and see the woodland change throughout the seasons, as well as make friends which helps form a sense of community. Booking termly is also much more cost effective, but there is the option to book week by week too.
  • What facilities are available at the site?
There is no water or electricity at the site, although we do have a porta-loo and there is a changing table for little ones. There is also ample parking available.
  • Do you run sessions for Home Educated Children or SEN Children?
We’re currently only running toddler sessions on a Friday morning, but the plan is to add in more sessions throughout the week as demand increases. Perhaps you’re interested in sessions for children who are Home Educated, sessions for SEN children, woodland baby sessions, weekend family sessions, or you’re a school or pre-school who would like to come for regular or one off trips. Please message us via the website or social media if you’d like more information.
